Middle East Green Initiative and UNCCD Sign MoU to Strengthen Cooperation on Combating Land Degradation

The Middle East Green Initiative and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation on joint programs and activities, mobilize technical and financial resources for vegetation cover development and desertification control projects, and support regional coordination to restore degraded land.

In the presence of His Excellency the Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, President of the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), and Chairman of the Ministerial Council of the Middle East Green Initiative, Eng. Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadhli, a memorandum of understanding was signed today, July 6, 2026, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, between the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the Middle East Green Initiative. The memorandum was signed by Her Excellency Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, and His Excellency Eng. Ibrahim Alturki, Secretary-General of the Middle East Green Initiative.

The memorandum of understanding aims to provide a framework between the two parties to enhance cooperation for implementing activities and programs of mutual interest to combat land degradation in the region, mobilize the necessary technical and financial resources for vegetation cover development and desertification control projects, and achieve regional coordination to attain the goals of the initiative in a way that serves the global direction towards rehabilitating degraded lands in the world.
